How to Hang a Large Tapestry Without Drilling: Choose the Right Mount
Oversized Woven Forest Tapestry hung above a sofa in a cozy living room

You may be able to hang a large tapestry without drilling, but no method guarantees an undamaged wall. The right choice depends on the tapestry's weight, the wall finish, the available span and the manufacturer's instructions. Check your lease before using adhesive mounts or pressure-mounted rods.

Choose the support, not just the hook

A clip-and-rod kit is not automatically a no-drill system: the rod itself still needs suitable support. Likewise, an ordinary sewn hem may not be a rod pocket. Inspect the construction before pushing a rod through it.

Before using removable adhesive

  1. Weigh the tapestry and any rod or clips the hooks will support.
  2. Read the instructions for the exact mounting product and surface. For example, 3M's Command guidance excludes wallpaper, brick and rough concrete for its usual products; that is not permission to use an unspecified alternative.
  3. Follow the product's preparation and waiting instructions. Do not substitute cleaning chemicals or add extra adhesive.
  4. Position the hanging away from heaters, vents, alarms and places where falling hardware could injure someone. Some hooks explicitly prohibit use above beds.
  5. Keep removal tabs accessible and retain the instructions. Do not hide the only removal point behind permanent trim.

Protect the tapestry as well as the wall

Use textile-compatible supports that spread the load without concentrating it on a fragile corner. Do not put adhesive directly onto printed fabric or assume that a product includes mounting hardware. For the Oversized Woven Forest Tapestry, check the current selected size, package contents and care information before planning the mount.

If a support starts coming loose

Take the tapestry down rather than pressing the mount back and adding more weight. Check the surface, load and installation instructions. A larger or heavier piece may need a different display method or a qualified installer's advice.

Remove it using the mount's instructions

Support the textile and rod before releasing any fastener. Follow the exact removal direction for the adhesive system; pulling a hook straight away from the wall can damage its finish. Stop if paint lifts or the fitting resists instead of improvising with heat or solvents.

Keep sizing and care separate from installation

For the room layout, see our tapestry size, colour and care guide. Clean the fabric only as its label permits; a mounting method does not establish whether it can be washed, vacuumed or spot-cleaned.

Frequently asked questions

Are removable hooks safe for wallpaper?

Do not assume so. Use them only if the exact manufacturer's instructions permit that surface; standard Command guidance does not.

Can I use a tension rod on an open flat wall?

A pressure-mounted rod needs compatible opposing surfaces. It cannot hold itself across an uninterrupted flat wall.

Does “no drill” mean “damage free”?

No. Adhesive removal, pressure, unsuitable paint and an overloaded support can still leave marks or cause damage.

Review the store's current return terms before ordering a tapestry for a specific installation.
